Helicopter Pilot Job Description

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a helicopter in support of power line construction operations.  Interface with project management team to implement the helicopter in construction activities. Additionally, conduct external load flight operations to include “tower top transfers” and “platform/skid work” (Class A load), move cargo via long line (Class B load) and install “sock-line” via side pulling (Class C load).  The duties and responsibilities of this class are governed by established policies, procedures and regulations found in company flight operations manuals, aircraft manufacturer’s operating manuals and Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with construction project management for the implementation of the helicopter.
  • Conduct pre-flight performance planning to include consideration of flight task(s), weather conditions, available fuel and other variable factors.
  • Performs pre-flight inspections of aircraft and associated flight task equipment.
  • Conduct helicopter flight operations in support of power line construction.
  • Conduct maintenance related test flights in order to functionally test aircraft systems.
  • Assists the flight mechanic as required in order to manipulate large, heavy, or awkward aircraft parts (e.g., the removal or replacement of the engine, main transmission assembly, etc.).
  • Enter flight operations related data into aircraft logbooks and other records to provide required documentation of aircraft condition.
  • Assist the flight mechanic in the maintenance of ground support equipment.
  • Respond "on call" to on-site and off-site locations to conduct helicopter operations.
  • Move items of up to 85 pounds for distances of up to 100 feet and manipulate aircraft parts.
  • Bend, stoop, and climb as necessary to access aircraft, components, and equipment to make inspections.
  • Understand and follow established programs and procedures of the company and the flight department.
  • Prepare detailed written documents using prescribed formats including; reports, flight records, maintenance records, log books, etc.
  • Communicate verbally with construction managers and mechanics for the purpose of exchanging technical information.
