By joining the Kentucky Department of Aviation as a Pilot in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to manage the activities of the helicopter aircraft and coordinate passenger services and aerial flight services for state agencies. We are seeking an individual who can operate a rotary-wing aircraft and single engine fixed-wing aircraft.

Holders of the Helicopter Pilot will complete tasks such as:

  • Manage the aerial services provided to state agencies and the operation of single or multi-engine airplanes in transporting these agencies.
  • Coordinate with other pilots in flight planning and mission coordination; schedule all aircraft flights; preparing and submitting flight requests for all Transportation Officials and other personnel requiring travel in and out of the state.
  • Maintain the aircraft ensuring that the aircraft is maintained and in an airworthy condition by pre-flight and weekly inspections.
  • Maintain all aircraft records; prepares and submits all records and reports required by the Commonwealth and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Holders of this position will obtain the following skills:

  • Department of Aviation fleet specific flight rating qualifications and a variety of unique mission profiles.
  • Become familiar with the geography of the Commonwealth and become comfortable flying in varying environments.
  • Determine passenger needs as well as information necessary to successfully complete the flights as assigned.
  • Department of Aviation KRS and KAR requirements related to the department, state travel regulations and policies and Capital City Airport Division policies and procedures.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Required to have a valid commercial pilot's license, an instrument rating, both fixed-wing and helicopter ratings, and minimum 750 hours total flight time.
  • Operate computers and electronic devices required in preparation of and during flight activities.
  • Perform reposition, maintenance verification, and company convenience flights as requested.
  • Customer Service is a valued skill in this position.

The candidate selected is required to have a current Class II Annual Flight Physical. Required to maintain a valid driver’s license, and may be required to drive a licensed vehicle. Typically required to lift and carry luggage and supplies in loading and off-loading aircraft. Climbing and crawling are required to prefight aircraft. There will be travel with this position, the department will work with the person in this position to accommodate both parties as much as possible. This position will be sitting in an aircraft and operating an aircraft for extended durations of time.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must have a valid commercial pilot's license with a helicopter rating and an instrument rating, with a minimum of 1,500 hours of flying time, which must have been in helicopters. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
