Job Summary


The Helicopter Pilot is a licensed helicopter pilot who is assigned and orientated to the Careflight program.  The pilot is responsible for flying helicopter missions requested by Avera McKennan. The pilot is directly responsible for all operations pertaining to the safe and efficient conduct of the flight from initial request until termination of the flight.  Must have a good working knowledge of the company Operations Manual, Federal Aviation Regulations, Operations Specifications, Aircraft Flight Manual and any other requirements pertinent to specific flights.  Must demonstrate interdisciplinary skills when working with team members.  Must have effective critical thinking skills to problem solve and immediately respond to changing environments.  May be required to work at all Avera Careflight bases/locations if the need arises.


Education and/or Experience


  • Required to have a minimum of 1500 total flight hours. 1200 hours must be in helicopters.  1000 hours must be Pilot in Command rotorcraft hours.
  • 100 unaided night hours or 50 hours unaided, with at least 100 aided night hours required.
  • 500 hours of turbine time required.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, and/or REGISTRATIONS 


  • Required to have and maintain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Certificate and instrument rating or an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate valid for Rotorcraft Category, Helicopter Class.
  • Current First or Second Class FAA Medical Certificate Required.
  • Successful completion of a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screening is required.
  • An Airline Transport Pilot rating is preferred.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 


  • $40.75 - $61.25 per hour
