Primary Purpose Provide practical flight and ground instruction for COCC degree-seeking students. Professional airplane pilot, and professional helicopter pilot career paths apply. Flight Instructor must maintain all student paperwork in compliance with FAA regulations.
CFI Definition:COCC’s CFI employee “types” include front line instructors, senior instructors, and chief pilots. All instructors, including the chief pilot may be dual-employed by COCC and the aircraft leasing company(ies).
Reporting Structure:This position reports to the COCC Aviation Program Director for all matters concerning COCC students, policies, and practices, including unsatisfactory training progress, disciplinary problems, scheduling issues, etc. COCC does not own or maintain aircraft, therefore the position also reports to the aircraft leasing company(ies) for matters concerning aircraft operations, maintenance, and safety.
Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain and audit flight and ground operations records.
  • Responsible for communicating/documenting student progress in accordance with College program requirements.
  • Oversee invoicing and verification of student flight lab account status.
  • Plan and dispatch all flights accurately.
  • Prepare all Federal Aviation Administration paperwork prior to the check ride
  • As CFI, responsible to be present during student solo flights and know the destination, route and contact number’s for students on the solo flight.
  • Follow all safety procedures and flight requirements outlined by Aircraft Rental companies/ college.

Overview – Roles and ResponsibilitiesCertified Flight Instructor Pilots must go through COCC’s recruitment and onboarding steps.

  • CFI Pilots:
    • have the authority to remove a student from flight status if the student proves to be a threat to flight safety.
    • work collaboratively with COCC full time faculty on all issues concerning student progress, or performance.
    • can/will prevent a COCC student from utilizing aircraft that are under lease by the COCC Aviation Program when acting in the interest of student safety, and protecting equipment on behalf of the leasing company.
  • In relationship to the Certified Flight Instructor Pilot role:
  • COCC full-time faculty:
    • Visit the airport on a recurring basis, but since they cannot maintain a full-time presence, rely on the CFI to inform COCC of irregularities concerning students.
    • Are responsible to communicate immediately with COCC HR and the Chief Flight Instructor Pilot regarding any changes to CFI employment status.
  • Aircraft leasing company(ies):
    • Cannot pay COCC instructors for purposes of instructing COCC students. That is the sole responsibility of COCC.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities All Flight Instructors must possess the listed knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of aviation (airplane/ helicopter as appropriate, rules and regulations).
  • Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
  • Ability to speak effectively to others information and ideas so that others will understand and skills to follow through.
  • Able to work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, company reps, and the general public.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language without the use of an interpreter.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
  • Skills to use general office equipment.
  • Skills and familiarity with use of following software Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, E-mail) and be able to navigate the internet. Must be able to learn Total Fixed Base Operation (FBO) software on the job.
  • Ability to travel throughout College district, and willingness to work various hours in a non-traditional workweek as required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate essential job functions as outlined above.
Ergonomic Requirements Working hours are regular per the established work schedule. Work is performed in an outside environment, with extended standing 50% of the time. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to also function effectively indoors in an office environment with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional minimal exposure to fumes and vapors, grease, oil and dirt. Occasionally handle heavy equipment. Computer screen is used more than 30 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
  • Associate’s Degree required, or show ability to complete Associate’s Degree within one year from date of hire.
  • Current Airplane or Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor Certification (CFI), as appropriate.
  • Current Airplane or Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor (instrument) ‘CFII’/ Multi Engine Instructor (MEI) certification as appropriate, or show ability to complete the CFII/MEI certifications within one year from date of hire.
  • Second Class Medical Certificate (FAA requirement).
  • Coursework or experience in outdoor leadership, field sciences, or equivalent.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30-days of employment (TSA requirement).
