The Chief Pilot (CP) is responsible for ensuring that all LFAS flight operations comply with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company standards. The CP supervises pilot staff, oversees training and proficiency, and ensures flight crews maintain required certifications and operational readiness.
This is a full-time, salaried leadership position with management responsibilities, including occasional line pilot duties and participation in the after-hours on-call Flight Operations Supervisor (FOS) schedule. The Chief Pilot serves as a key leader in maintaining safety, operational excellence, and accountability across all LFAS aviation operations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise all pilots employed under the certificate.
- Lead the LFAS training committee and oversee pilot training, checking, and currency programs.
- Maintain high standards of professional practice and enforce company policies, procedures, and FAA regulations.
- Recommend hiring, promotion, discipline, and termination of pilot staff.
- Assign Pilot-in-Command (PIC) duties and take corrective action when deviations occur.
- Share responsibility as after-hours FOS.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with 14 CFR Part 135.293, 135.297, and 135.299.
- Ensure aviation medical personnel receive required Aviation Safety Awareness Training per 14 CFR Part 135.621.
- Maintain proficiency as PIC in LFAS aircraft.
- Administer LFAS Anti-Drug and Alcohol Misuse Prevention Programs.
Training & Records
- Maintain pilot proficiency, training, and flight/duty records.
- Oversee pre-employment pilot screening to ensure qualifications and competency.
- Ensure aircraft are properly equipped for assigned missions.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies, procedures, and FAA-mandated requirements.
- Assist in maintaining company records and manuals.
Safety, Risk & Quality Management
- Ensure compliance with all FAA, OSHA, and safety requirements.
- Promote and lead a culture of safety.
- Support reporting, investigation, and resolution of safety-related events.
- Collaborate with the Safety Coordinator to close out safety audits and findings.
Communication & Coordination
- Disseminate operational updates and program policy changes.
- Approve or delegate aviation personnel schedules, including PIC assignments.
- Conduct monthly meetings with aviation staff.
- Maintain current aircraft checklists and operational documentation.
Authority
- All rotor-wing (RW) pilot staff report directly to the CP.
- Fixed-wing (FW) pilots report to the Assistant Chief Pilot, with the CP retaining final responsibility.
- Base Lead Pilots support the CP in disseminating information, enforcing policies, and managing scheduling.
Qualifications
- Meets FAA requirements under 14 CFR Part 119 and Part 135 for Chief Pilot designation.
- Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification required.
- PIC qualified and current in at least one LFAS aircraft (preferred: type experience in LFAS-operated aircraft).
- Highly knowledgeable of FARs, Operations Specifications, General Operations Manual (GOM), and applicable flight manuals.
- Eligible to qualify as a Check Airman within 12 months of hire.
- Previous 14 CFR Part 135 aviation management experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Must hold a current FAA Class I medical certificate.
- Must meet LFAS weight and fitness standards.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. using proper body mechanics.
- Required to refuel and tug/tow aircraft.
- Exposure to motion, vibration, jet fumes, extreme temperatures, and patient care environments with potential infectious disease exposure.
- Travel between LFAS bases required.
- Extended periods of sitting in cockpit and office settings.
